Research

When and how to conduct research for accurate transcription.

Research

Proper research is of paramount importance for any file. Do not assume the spellings of any brands or organisation names – please conduct proper research using Google.

What to Research

Please ensure you fully research:

  • Brand names
  • Speaker names
  • Organisation names
  • Any dubious personal names (ensuring anything that is dubious is placed in square brackets in the first instance, as a guess)

#

Correct Stylisation

It's also important that you ensure the stylisation is correct:

  • PowerPoint (not Power Point)
  • Coca-Cola (not Coca Cola)
  • SPAR (not Spar)

#

Research Process

1. Use Google as your primary research tool

2. Check official websites for correct spellings and capitalisation

3. Verify brand names on company websites

4. Look up organisation names for official formatting

5. When uncertain, place in square brackets as a guess

#

Best Practices

  • Never assume you know the correct spelling
  • Double-check proper nouns and company names
  • Be consistent with formatting throughout the document
  • Research early rather than guessing and having to correct later

When in Doubt

If research doesn't yield clear results, use square bracket notation for your best guess and include a timestamp.
