Percentages and Metrics

All percentages and most metrics in numbers, e.g. 4%

Measurements

Measurements should be abbreviated:

  • 400 metres should be 400m
  • 10 centilitres should be 10cl
  • Kilowatts should be kw

Most importantly, be consistent.

Fractions

Example: Three and a half stone should be written as 3½ stone.

Creating Fractions in Word

If you type it as 3 (space) 1/2 stone Word will then automatically turn the 1/2 into superscript text. Ideally, what you would then do is remove the space between the 3 and the 1/2.

Examples

Measurements:

  • 5km (not 5 kilometres)
  • 250ml (not 250 millilitres)
  • 75kg (not 75 kilograms)
  • 30cm (not 30 centimetres)

Fractions:

  • 2½ hours
  • 1¼ miles
  • 3¾ tonnes

Percentages:

  • 25%
  • 0.5%
  • 100%
